The Calaveras County Airport Maury Rasmussen Field (CPU) issued an update on social media Wednesday saying the Gann Fire was still several miles away and advised pilots to avoid the area.

Just after 11 a.m., on Wednesday airport authorities reported the Gann fire line was “still a handful of miles away as the crow flies,” and noted there is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in the area.

“Please do not come into an evacuation zone unless absolutely necessary. The power has been on/off throughout the night,” airport authorities said in a statement published Tuesday morning.

A video published to the airport’s social media page showed one Beechcraft V-tail on the flightline. It was not immediately clear how many people and aircraft are currently at the airport. An email sent to an address listed for the airport was not immediately returned Wednesday. Wingman will update this story if we receive more information.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s website shows the TFR covers an area within a 5 nautical mile radius of the fire. Wingman has previously reported that authorities with CalFire advise pilots to remain clear of active wildfire areas.

“If you see a fire, you see smoke, and you’re in general aviation,and you think you want to go investigate it, I would say don’t,” Firehawk Pilot Jason Thrasher previously told Wingman, adding that general aviation aircraft should allow at least 10 miles to avoid incoming CalFire aircraft. “Don’t go investigate that fire, somebody’s going to be on it.”

Aviation tracking site Flightradar 24 shows several CalFire helicopters departing and returning at Columbia Regional Airport (COA) including a Sikorsky CH-54A and a CH-47D Chinook throughout the day on Tuesday.

Several air tankers could also be seen landing and departing from McClellan Airport Tuesday afternoon and into early evening. Flight tracking data shows the aircraft made several round trips to the Gann fire from McClellan. The tankers included C-130s, two DC-10s, and an MD-87.

In addition to air tankers and helicopters, CalFire is employing observation aircraft such as the agency’s OV-10s and a King Air 200.

The Gann fire was at 9,363 acres with 10 percent containment as of late Wednesday morning, according to CalFire.
