The skies above Sacramento and surrounding areas can expect to see increased helicopter activity at night as CALFIRE conducts training exercises this weekend, according to an announcement by the agency.

CALFIRE announced the flights in a June 3 press release, saying residents can expect to see increased helicopter activity on June 4 through 10. The aircraft are planned to conduct operations at Lake Berryessa as well as Lake Englebright. 

The flights are scheduled for June 5, 6, 9, and 10 and will be conducted into late-night hours up to midnight, the agency said. CALFIRE maintains a large presence at McClellan (MCC), but the departure location for the aircraft was not immediately available.

“These exercises are vital for night fire suppression,” the release said. “They ensure strong coordination and give crews the opportunity to master teamwork, communication and precise water drops in limited visibility.”

Residents near Lake Englebright and Lake Berryessa can expect to see low flying helicopters throughout the training, the release said.

The training is consistent with the agency’s mission to stay current with technology, training, and resources, according to the release. 

In a May 5 press event, CALFIRE demonstrated their night operations capabilities to members of the media. Participants were shown night vision goggles and were allowed to sit-in on a Firehawk flight simulator designed to mimic a night environment.
